Are you still 'pre-coffee'?

I don’t know about you, but I can wake up some mornings and although appearances suggest I’m awake, the lack of coffee dictates something else. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one. The type who can function on a pretty basic level, but the caffeine kick is that welcome boost of energy needed to move forward at full capacity…

Looking at today’s mainstream media and the turmoil and tragedy we appear to be daily presented with, it’s not uncommon to hear phrases which centre us around being on guard, staying awake and remaining alert. Talks of ‘the system’ and whispers of a revolution are started daily, I’m sure.

I’m not here to talk about politics, movements or ‘the system’ for that matter, but debates and conspiracy theories aside, as Christians, we actually called to take this whole issue a little more seriously.

It’s not new news to be told to stay awake.

Mark 13:32-36 makes it very clear how we’re supposed to be living as servants of Christ. Being awake is certainly a part of it.

But this state of awake is not, I don’t think, some pre-coffee, eyes half shut, wandering around on half a tank of gas type of awake.

Far from it.

In fact, some translations render this ‘stay awake’ term simply as ‘watch’ which is derived from a place of being vigilant and on guard.

And so, what are we to be on guard with?

“It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake.” (Mark 13:34)

The servants in the illustration are not just semi-consciously awake. They’re actually in charge of a household and they’re in charge of their work as they vigilantly wait for the return of their master.

The perceived absence of the master doesn’t provoke a lack of work or attention paid to the task at hand. Quite the opposite, in fact. The servants are committed to the work they’ve been tasked with and even though they’re not quite sure when they’re going to hear that “well done, good and faithful servant” on their master’s return, that doesn’t stop them from doing what they’re supposed to be doing. There’s no delay tactics at play here.

In fact, they’re warned against it in verse 36. (“lest he come suddenly and find you asleep”)

Turning things back to us for a minute, I can’t help but ask a question…

Are you awake?

Are you committed to following through with the work you’ve been given to do on this earth with your one life while you wait for the master’s return? Or are you still pre-coffee?

The truth of the matter is that it can be so, so hard to keep working, to keep serving and to keep showing up especially in the midst of the turmoil, confusion and pain which seems to be more prevalent today than ever before.

But that’s the call.

The call is to keep on keeping on,

The call is to let your light shine in the darkness,

The call is to remind yourself that the gifts, skills, talents and work you’ve been given to use on this earth are not to be taken lightly. Nor are they to be disregarded.

Do the work the world is waiting for.
